The more affordable tables are generally non-slate tables, which are made of a specially treated wood to prevent warping, and much lighter than slate tables.  Slate pool tables are heavier, sturdier, more pleasing to the eye, and have additional styling around the pool table pockets and other areas.  Slate tables are more likely to give you a true level table and are not subject to warping because they are stone; whereas, wood tables are cheaper but can be susceptible to warping or bending later on. In addition, slate tables usually require professional installation unless you own the necessary tools and are pretty handy. A slate alternative such as slatron or other treated wood alternatives can generally be installed by the average customer.

The more costly tables usually offer additional features, such as ball return. Ball return allows all the pool balls to go to a main section at the end of the table as opposed to the drop pocket feature, where the balls stay in pocket basket. The ball return option is very convenient and makes racking up quicker and easier.

The less expensive pool tables are generally a smaller billiard pool table size and are great for smaller spaces or children.
